Muhammadu Sanusi II has been reinstalled as the Emir of Kano, a position he previously held before being deposed in 2020.
The reinstatement ceremony took place at the Kano State Government House on May 24, 2024, following the state government's decision to repeal the law that led to his initial dethronement.
The repeal of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, 2019, effectively restores Emir Sanusi to his rightful position and dissolves the emirate councils created by the previous administration. Governor Abba Yusuf hailed the move as a victory for justice and the rule of law, and emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity and tradition of the Kano Emirate.
With the repeal, the emirs appointed to the dissolved emirates have been ordered to vacate their palaces, and Emir Sanusi II has resumed his duties as the Emir of Kano. This development marks a significant turning point in the history of the Kano Emirate and reinforces the importance of respecting traditional institutions and the rule of law.
