Kenyan MP and Wife Offer Unprecedented Apology for Supporting Controversial Finance Bill

Nakuru Town East Member of Parliament (MP) David Gikaria and his wife, Violet Nzisa Katua, have issued a public apology for their support of the Finance Bill 2024.

It was learnt that On Friday, June 28, 2024, the couple was photographed wearing matching white t-shirts featuring apologetic messages, which swiftly gained widespread attention on social media.

Gikaria's t-shirt read, "I am sorry, Please forgive me for not listening to you in rejecting the finance bill." His wife, Nzisa, demonstrated her support by wearing a similar t-shirt that said, "He is sorry, Please forgive him."

This extraordinary gesture comes on the heels of apologies from several other politicians who also supported the Finance Bill 2024, which sparked violent protests across the country. The couple's public apology marks a rare instance of political accountability in Kenya.

The Finance Bill 2024 has been a highly contested issue, with widespread outrage expressed by Kenyans. The apologies from Gikaria and other politicians may be seen as an attempt to appease public opinion and rebuild trust with their constituents.

Gikaria's apology is a significant development, as it demonstrates a willingness to listen to constituent concerns and acknowledge mistakes. This move may also pressure other politicians to follow suit and take responsibility for their actions.
