Mason Greenwood's proposed transfer to Olympique de Marseille has been met with controversy after the city's mayor, Benoit Payan, publicly voiced his opposition.
Greenwood, a talented young striker, was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior. The charges were ultimately dropped due to withdrawn witness cooperation, but the case tarnished his reputation.
Following his suspension, Greenwood spent the 2022/23 season on loan at La Liga side Getafe. There, he played in 32 matches, scoring 8 goals. Despite his on-field contributions, Manchester United appear willing to move him on.
Recent reports suggested a potential £26.7 million transfer to Marseille, with personal terms still under negotiation. However, Mayor Payan has expressed strong disapproval, stating, "I do not want my club to be associated with shame. This is unacceptable." He reportedly plans to discuss the matter with the club's president in an attempt to block the transfer.
Greenwood has consistently denied all allegations.
