Pepe Contemplates Retirement from International Football
Portugal's Pepe has indicated that he may be considering retirement from international football, following Portugal's defeat to France in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals. The veteran defender, who has been a mainstay of the Portuguese national team for over a decade, was visibly emotional after the match, fueling speculation about his future in the sport.
The 41-year-old Pepe has accumulated an impressive 134 caps for Portugal, scoring 8 goals since his debut in 2007. He has represented his country in four European Championships and three World Cups, winning the Euro 2016 title.
When asked about his future plans after the exit from Euros, Pepe replied, "Future? I have already made my decision and will reveal it soon." While he did not elaborate on his plans, his emotional response to the defeat and his advanced age suggest that retirement may be a possibility.
