Darwin Núñez, the Uruguayan forward who plays for Liverpool, has been sanctioned with a $20,000 fine and a five-game suspension following a brawl during the Copa América semifinal match between Uruguay and Colombia in July 2024.

As a result, Núñez will miss Uruguay's upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador.

The incident involved several Uruguay players, including Núñez, engaging in confrontations with Colombian fans after the match, with Núñez reportedly attempting to throw a chair into the crowd. This altercation led to CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body, imposing various penalties on the players involved.

Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur's Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-game suspension, while José María Giménez, Mathías Olivera, and Ronald Araújo were each banned for three games. Other players involved in lesser capacities were also fined, and the Uruguayan Football Federation was fined $20,000.
