Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has been ruled out for several weeks due to a shoulder injury he sustained in training.
According to manager Mikel Arteta, the injury occurred during one of Merino's initial sessions with the team when "he landed on the floor, and Gabi went on top of him," likely causing a small fracture.
This unfortunate incident means that Merino will miss not only his anticipated debut but also Arsenal's Premier League match against Brighton this weekend.
Merino, who joined Arsenal earlier this week from Real Sociedad in a deal worth around €33.5 million, had been expected to make an immediate impact in the squad. His arrival was particularly exciting for Arsenal fans following his impressive performances for Spain during their Euro 2024-winning campaign.
Arteta had expressed his enthusiasm about Merino's "experience and versatility," noting that he would significantly strengthen the team.
However, Merino's injury delays his contribution, with further assessments needed to determine the full extent of his absence.
