Bosun Tijani, the Minister for Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has refuted allegations that the Federal Government instructed telecommunication companies to interfere with their networks during the August 1 protest.
Numerous Nigerians reported poor telephone network connections during the protest, leading to widespread complaints.
In a statement on Channels TV, Tijani clarified that no such directives were given to the telecommunication companies. He asserted, "There is no instruction to tamper with network. Absolutely no instruction." This was in response to claims suggesting a deliberate disruption of services by the government.
Tijani also provided insight into potential reasons for the network issues. He noted that the high volume of online activity due to many people being away from work might have led to network congestion. "You also need to understand that when you have a significant amount of people not at work, people are online and so you would expect the traffic to be extremely high and I am not saying that is the cause," he explained. He also admitted that he had not conducted any technical assessment to determine the exact cause of the network problems, stating, "I have not done any technical assessment."
