Kano State Police Command has apprehended 269 individuals suspected of engaging in the destruction and looting of government and public properties under the guise of a nationwide protest.

In a statement released on August 1, 2024, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, detailed the recovery of significant quantities of stolen goods from the suspects. These include numerous 25-litre jerricans of vegetable oil, a large quantity of stationery, foodstuffs, and other valuable items.

The statement from the police reads, “Today, Thursday, 1st of August, 2024, the Kano State Police Command has successfully apprehended some criminals who exploited the planned nationwide strike as a cover for their malicious activities. These individuals engaged in acts of violence, destruction, looting, and causing harm to innocent civilians and resulting in the damage of public and private properties.” This highlights the extensive nature of the criminal activities that took place, including violence and widespread damage.

The statement further elaborates, “In a swift and efficient response to these criminal activities, a total of two hundred and sixty-nine (269) suspects responsible for destructions, looting, and instigating chaos under the guise of the nationwide protest were arrested with recovery from them many Jerricans of 25 Litres of Groundnut Oil, a large quantity of Stationeries, Foodstuffs, and other valuable properties.” This underscores the scale of the operation and the range of items recovered from the suspects.

Currently, the suspects are being held at the Command's Criminal Investigation Department (CID). They will be formally charged in court upon the completion of the ongoing investigation. The police have also indicated that further arrests and recoveries are anticipated as their efforts continue.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Dogo, reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding lives and property. He stressed that any attempt to incite violence, cause destruction, loot, or spread false news would be met with legal action. Additionally, CP Dogo urged residents to strictly adhere to the 24-hour curfew imposed by the State Government, noting that violations would not be tolerated.
