Nigerian Navy Officer Lt. Cdr. Gideon Yashim Gwaza Dies During Dangerous Rescue Operation to Save 59 Individuals from Sinking Dredging Vessel MV AMBIKA 4

Gideon Yashim Gwaza, a Lieutenant Commander in the Nigerian Navy, tragically lost his life while leading a critical rescue mission. Lt. Cdr. Gwaza was at the forefront of an operation to save 59 individuals aboard the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4, which was situated at Okpobo Field near the Okpobo River.

On July 30, 2024, the Nigerian Navy received an urgent distress call from MV AMBIKA 4, a vessel engaged in dredging operations under the contract of Sterling Global Oil Limited. The vessel was in severe danger of sinking near the treacherous entrance of the Okpobo River, an area notoriously turbulent at this time of year.

In response to the distress signal, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BONNY swiftly deployed a rescue team. This team, comprised of 10 armed personnel in two Interceptor Boats, was led by Lt. Cdr. Gwaza. Despite their best efforts, the team encountered significant challenges due to the harsh wave conditions, making their approach to the distressed vessel perilous.

To bolster the initial rescue operation, a secondary squadron of three boats was sent as reinforcements. Additionally, the Navy mobilized a range of assets including the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and a Nigerian Airforce helicopter to support the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

The mission was marked by the bravery and dedication of Lt. Cdr. Gwaza, who, despite the extreme conditions, remained committed to the rescue operation until the end. His sacrifice underscores the inherent risks faced by naval personnel during such high-stakes operations and highlights the critical role they play in ensuring maritime safety.
