In the Bolari area of Gombe State, no fewer than three individuals were reportedly killed by hoodlums known as Kalare boys. These groups are notorious in the region for their violent activities and often cause unrest within local communities.

Muhammad Bello, the commandant of the Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), disclosed this during a press briefing on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. He emphasized that the killings were unrelated to the ongoing protest, which has seen significant attention and involvement from various groups in the state.

"I want to correct an impression about an incident that happened yesterday (Tuesday). It’s not related to the mass protest but the usual thing with the Kalare people in the state," he stated. This statement highlights the need to differentiate between the routine violent activities of these gangs and the broader socio-political movements occurring concurrently.

"The Kalari boys killed three at Bolari but it had nothing to do with the protest. Within their ranks, they had a misunderstanding which led to clashes. I just want to emphasise that it’s not related to the protest. We are ever ready, combatant ready but not going to shoot anyone," he continued. Here, Bello clarifies that the incident was an internal conflict among the Kalare boys themselves, resulting in the fatalities, rather than any interaction with the protestors. His assurance of being "combatant ready" yet not resorting to shooting underscores a commitment to maintaining order without excessive force.

"In the history of this country, there had never been any peaceful demonstration. We are ready not for war but for any situation. We will go out to safeguard the assets of federal, state, and local government areas. We have deployed 600 officers across the state." This remark reflects Bello's broader perspective on civil unrest in Nigeria, pointing out the challenges of managing protests. The deployment of 600 officers indicates a substantial commitment to maintaining security and protecting government properties.

He further noted, "We must work in synergy with other security agencies. You have to collaborate with other security agencies to protect lives and property." This collaboration among various security forces is crucial for a unified and effective response to both criminal activities and civil disturbances, ensuring comprehensive safety measures.

Bello reaffirmed his command's commitment to ensuring the protection of lives and property, calling for the return of those on break and the special protection of individuals. "Anyone you know who has more than one of our officers should be called back. Protection of property is free. Anyone who comes requesting for security cover should be given." By advocating for the recall of officers and emphasizing the availability of free protection services, Bello aims to enhance security readiness and reassure the public of their safety amidst ongoing tensions.
