274 Inmates Missing After Flooding Destroys Custodial Facility in Maiduguri escaped from Maiduguri prison ? NCoS

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that 274 inmates are currently missing following the collapse of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Maiduguri, Borno State. The disaster occurred after severe flooding weakened the facility’s walls, leading to the escape of numerous detainees.

Spokesperson's Statement on the Incident

Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the NCoS, released an official statement in Abuja on Sunday, September 15, 2024, detailing the incident. He attributed the flood to the collapse of the Alau Dam, which overflowed after heavy rainfall. This devastating event has submerged large parts of Maiduguri, displacing over a million residents. "The unfortunate incident has left scars, bringing down the walls of the correctional facilities, including the Medium Security Custodial Centre Maiduguri (MSCC) as well as the staff quarters in the city," Abubakar explained.

In addition to the damage at the custodial centre, Abubakar reported that the floods have claimed the lives of at least 30 people, with the death toll expected to rise as authorities work to rescue thousands of individuals trapped in their homes.

Efforts to Recapture Missing Inmates

According to Abubakar, the NCoS, along with support from other security agencies, evacuated inmates to safer locations. However, during the process, it was discovered that 281 inmates had escaped. He confirmed that seven of these inmates have since been recaptured and returned to custody. "Efforts are on the ground to track down the rest and bring them back to safe custody," he added, stressing that authorities were actively working to locate the remaining fugitives.

Security Measures and Public Safety

Abubakar reassured the public that the NCoS has the necessary details of the escaped inmates, including their biometric data. He also emphasized that the service is collaborating closely with other security agencies, deploying both "covert and overt" operations to ensure the swift return of the missing inmates. "While this effort is on, the public is assured that the incident does not impede or affect public safety," he concluded.

The flooding has left a significant impact on Maiduguri, and authorities continue to work tirelessly to address the aftermath of the disaster.
