Dangote Refinery Denies NNPCL's Claim of Selling Fuel at ₦898 per Litre, Calls Statement Misleading

The Dangote Refinery has responded to claims made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) regarding the pricing of fuel purchased from the local refinery.

The response follows a recent announcement made by NNPCL after lifting petrol from the Dangote Facility, located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

In a statement released by NNPCL spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, it was disclosed that petrol was successfully loaded from the Dangote Refinery. Soneye was quoted by Daily Trust as saying, “We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today. The claim that we purchased it at ₦760 per litre is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was ₦898 per litre.”

Dangote Refinery's Response to the Pricing Allegation

In reaction to this claim, Dangote Refinery urged the public to dismiss the information, describing it as "malicious and misleading." The company emphasized that the figures being quoted did not reflect the reality of the transaction.

In an official statement released by Anthony Chiejina, the Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote, the refinery clarified its stance on the matter. “Our attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to NNPCL spokesperson, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, that we sell our PMS at ₦898 per litre to the NNPCL. This statement is both misleading and mischievous, deliberately aimed at undermining the milestone achievement recorded today, September 15, 2024, towards addressing energy insufficiency and insecurity, which has bedevilled the economy in the past 50 years.”

Awaiting Formal Announcement from the Government

The company further explained that the official pricing would be determined by a technical sub-committee of the Federal Government, which will be making an announcement soon. “We urge Nigerians to disregard this malicious statement and await a formal announcement on the pricing by the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, which will commence on October 1, 2024, bearing in mind that our current stock of crude was procured in dollars,” the statement added.

Petroleum Product Sales in Dollars

Furthermore, Dangote Refinery clarified that the petroleum products sold to NNPCL were transacted in dollars, not naira, with considerable savings compared to the cost of imported fuel. The company assured the public that this initiative would ensure the availability of petrol across all regions of the country. “It should also be noted that we sold the products to NNPCL in dollars with a lot of savings against what they are currently importing. With this action, there will be petrol in every local government area of the country regardless of their remote nature.”

Assurance on Fuel Availability

The refinery concluded by assuring Nigerians that it remains committed to providing quality petroleum products and alleviating the long-standing issue of fuel scarcity. “We assure Nigerians of the availability of quality petroleum products and putting an end to the endemic fuel scarcity in the country,” the statement concluded.
