Alves, who was sentenced to four and a half years after being convicted of rape, was released in March 2024 after paying a bail bond of €1 million (around £850,000). The bond, reportedly funded by a Brazilian magazine in exchange for an exclusive interview, enabled the 41-year-old to regain temporary freedom while appealing the sentence.
Alves who is now 41, last played professional football in 2023, reportedly returned to the pitch in an informal match on an artificial surface in Barcelona. Using an app that connects local football enthusiasts for casual games, the former defender joined the game despite not knowing his teammates.
Interestingly, Alves was seen wearing a Boca Juniors shirt, a club he never played for during his decorated career.
