Spell at Tottenham Hotspur
Steven Bergwijn's journey in the Premier League began in January 2020 when he signed a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of £26.7 million. Bergwijn made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in a 2-0 victory against Manchester City and earning the Man of the Match accolade. Despite a promising start, his time at Tottenham was marred by injuries, including a significant ankle sprain in March 2020. Nevertheless, Bergwijn managed to make memorable contributions, such as his dramatic brace against Leicester City in January 2022, which secured a 3-2 victory for Spurs.
Transfer to Ajax
In July 2022, Bergwijn returned to his homeland, signing a five-year deal with Ajax for a record-breaking transfer fee of €31.25 million. His tenure at Ajax was marked by impressive performances, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Groningen. Bergwijn's leadership qualities were recognized when he was named Ajax's captain in August 2023. Over two seasons, he made 80 appearances and contributed 41 goals, solidifying his status as a key player for the Dutch giants.
New Chapter at Al-Ittihad
The move to Al-Ittihad offers Bergwijn a fresh start and the opportunity to play alongside notable names such as Karim Benzema, Fabinho, and N’Golo Kanté.
