South African singer Tyla has come under scrutiny from On-Air Personality (OAP) Dotun following her acceptance speech at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), where she won the Best Afrobeats Award.
Tyla made history as the first African female artist to win this prestigious award during the ceremony held on Wednesday, September 11, at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Not only did she achieve this milestone, but she also became the first South African artist to receive a VMA in any category.
The award saw her triumph over other prominent artists, including Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, Tems, and Usher with Pheelz. Tyla won the accolade for her hit song, "Water."
During her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her joy, calling the win “just so special but also bittersweet." She explained this sentiment by stating that she represents Amapiano music, a genre different from Afrobeats. She emphasized that “African music is so diverse,” and it should not be confined to just Afrobeats.
In response to her remarks, OAP Dotun expressed disappointment, describing her win as a “miss.” He suggested that instead of accepting the award, Tyla could have either declined it or denounced her nomination, given that it didn’t align with her genre. Dotun criticized Tyla for accepting an award that, in his view, does not represent Amapiano or her musical identity.
