Manchester City's James McAtee's late brace propelled England Under-21s to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ukraine at the Vitality Stadium on Friday night.
Trailing 1-0, courtesy of Taras Mykhavko's headed goal from a corner, McAtee sparked a stunning turnaround. The Manchester City midfielder equalized in the 88th minute with a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box.
McAtee then sealed the win in the 92nd minute, calmly converting a loose ball following Jamie Bynoe-Gittens' low cross.
In an emotional tribute, McAtee dedicated his goals to former Sheffield United teammate George Baldock, who tragically passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 31.
After scoring, McAtee revealed a message under his England shirt: "GB 2 REST EASY BROTHER X". McAtee said, "I love you to bits brother, thank you for looking after me and also thank you for the memories that we shared together".
The football community has been paying tribute to Baldock, with many expressing shock and sadness at his sudden passing. Sheffield United released a statement saying, "The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends".
Baldock's family stated, "We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss".
The Greek national team, for which Baldock made 12 appearances, will wear black armbands in his memory during their upcoming Nations League clash against England. A minute's silence is also expected to be held during their match against the Republic of Ireland.
England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley praised McAtee's match-winning performance, highlighting the midfielder's exceptional skill and mental toughness.
The victory maintains England's momentum in the UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifiers.
