The family of former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has released a statement confirming the circumstances surrounding his tragic passing.
In a heartfelt announcement, the family revealed that a post-mortem examination determined Baldock's cause of death to be drowning, occurring while swimming in the pool at his residence in Glyfada, Athens.
The statement read, in part: "We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George... We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens."
Baldock, 31, had joined Panathinaikos this summer after spending seven seasons with Sheffield United, accumulating over 200 appearances in the Premier League and Championship. He also represented the Greek national team 12 times.
The football community continues to mourn the loss of Baldock, with tributes pouring in from teammates, players, and fans.
Sheffield United released a statement offering condolences, saying, "The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."
