The incident occurred following Forest's 1-0 loss to Fulham on September 28, 2024.

Marinakis denied the accusation, explaining that he was coughing due to a hacking cough brought on by smoking cigars. However, the commission dismissed this defense.

The Football Association (FA) issued a statement condemning Marinakis's actions, calling them an "egregious display of disrespectful behavior." The FA stressed that such conduct undermines respect for match officials and has no place in the sport. They added that the ban should serve as a warning to others against similar behavior.

On Monday night, Nottingham Forest bounced back to secure a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. Chris Wood netted the only goal of the match.
