While Osimhen, who now has 23 goals for Nigeria, emphasized that he isn’t focused on breaking the record, he acknowledged that even if he does, Yekini will always be regarded as the greatest striker in the team's history.
He highlighted that Yekini’s record has stood for a long time and deserves to be celebrated. Osimhen stated, “I just want to do my job, win games, score goals, and provide assists for my team. If I surpass it, I surpass it, but that doesn’t take away from Yekini’s legacy”.
Osimhen's recent performance in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Benin on November 14, 2024, saw him score the equalizing goal, which was crucial for the team, ensuring they remained on track for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. This goal added to his tally and strengthened his position among the top scorers for Nigeria.
