In an interview with BBC's Oluwashina Okeleji, Boniface acknowledged the setback but maintained a positive outlook, stating, “Of course, I’m disappointed not being shortlisted. If it’s what I did last season, I should be disappointed, but I don’t stress about it.”
Boniface's standout campaign in 2023-24 saw him score 21 goals and provide 10 assists in 34 appearances for Leverkusen. He played a vital role in their Bundesliga title win and helped them secure the DFB-Pokal. Additionally, he contributed significantly to their Europa League run, where they finished as runners-up. His efforts earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, and he was also included in the league’s Team of the Season.
On the question of who he would pick for the CAF award, Boniface confidently declared, "If I’m to pick the winner, it would be Lookman 100 per cent and if I were there, I would pick myself." This statement reflects his belief in his own performance, while also acknowledging the talent of others.
For Nigeria, Boniface has been an essential figure, earning caps and contributing in key international fixtures, though he missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury. He remains a promising talent both for club and country.
