A tragic mining site collapse in Maiagwagwa, located in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, as confirmed by Bassa LGA Chairman Dr. Joshua Riti. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was reported to the public on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Jos.

Dr. Riti expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, revealing that seven of the victims were natives of Bassa LGA. "This is an unfortunate incident; these young people were simply seeking a means of livelihood," he stated. "They ventured out to make productive use of their energy, striving to cope with the current economic challenges in the country, only to meet an untimely death."

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the collapsed mining site lies along the boundaries of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs. The majority of the deceased were young adults, aged between 18 and 30 years, with six of the victims hailing from Kiche land in Rukuba chiefdom.
