
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's manager, provided clarity on his decision to bench Enzo Fernández during the team's 1-1 draw with Arsenal on November 10, 2024.
Despite Fernández being fit and ready to start, Maresca explained that his decision was based on tactical considerations.
He noted that "Enzo was ready to play from the start as all the others... but we decided not to for a tactical reason." However, Maresca was quick to praise the Argentine midfielder's performance after he came on as a substitute, stating, "when he entered the game, he was excellent."
Chelsea played to a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on November 10, 2024, at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal took the lead through Gabriel Martinelli in the 60th minute, but Chelsea responded quickly with a stunning equalizer from Pedro Neto in the 70th minute.
Maresca also emphasized his ongoing trust in Fernández, acknowledging that the midfielder's absence from the starting XI doesn't reflect a lack of confidence in him. He explained that his preferred midfield pairing of Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia offers the team physicality and balance, which he believes is key to Chelsea's success at the moment.
