The child passed away in the Democratic Republic of Congo following a brief illness. Elia's partner, Sarah, was in Congo with their twin sons and one-year-old daughter at the time of the tragedy.
Upon receiving the devastating news, Elia immediately traveled to Congo to be with his family, resulting in his absence from Young Boys' UEFA Champions League match against VfB Stuttgart. In a gesture of solidarity, teammate Lukasz Lakomy held up Elia's jersey after scoring the opening goal in the 5-1 defeat.
The club expressed profound sorrow, stating, "Meschack Elia and Young Boys received incredibly sad news on Tuesday. To everyone's surprise, one of Meschack's sons has died after a brief illness." Club spokesman Albert Staudenmann added, "Meschack was on the floor when he heard the news—he was destroyed. He went to his teammates, who tried to support him with words and embraces."
Elia, 27, has been instrumental in Young Boys' success, contributing to four Swiss Super League titles. His absence is keenly felt as the team faces challenges in the Champions League, having lost all six of their group stage matches. They are scheduled to play against Celtic on January 22.
The football community extends its deepest condolences to Meschack Elia and his family during this profoundly difficult time.
