Dele Farotimi, a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, has sparked widespread discussion on social media by sharing a photograph of himself enjoying a drink and smoking a cigar in his residence.

This image was posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) shortly after his release from a correctional facility in Ekiti State.

In the photo, Farotimi is seen holding a drink in his right hand and a lit cigar in his left, posing in his home. Accompanying the image, he tweeted: "Dare to live: before you die..."

Farotimi's detention followed the publication of his book, "Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System," which critically examines the nation's legal framework. The book gained significant attention, reaching the top of Amazon's bestseller list worldwide. However, it also led to legal challenges, including allegations of defamation from prominent Nigerian lawyer Afe Babalola.

After spending over two weeks in detention, Farotimi was granted bail on December 20, 2024, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State. The court set his bail at ₦30 million and imposed conditions, including the provision of three sureties with landed property in the southwest region, a ban on media interviews, and the surrender of his international passport.

His release has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a victory for free speech and human rights, while critics express concern over the legal proceedings and the broader implications for freedom of expression in Nigeria.
