Manchester United fans made their frustrations with Marcus Rashford clear during the team's Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night. A section of the traveling supporters unveiled a banner reading, "Excuses. Ta ra, Marcus," in response to the player's recent comments about potentially leaving the club.
Rashford, now 27, had earlier shared his thoughts on seeking a fresh challenge, stating, "For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps." He emphasized his desire for a smooth departure from Old Trafford, asserting that he wanted to part ways without any "hard feelings."
Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim addressed Rashford’s remarks, suggesting that direct communication might have been a better approach. "If this was me, probably I would speak with the manager," Amorim said. Despite recent controversies, Amorim denied that leaving Rashford out of the squad for the Manchester derby was intended to send any message.
The fan protest during the Tottenham match evoked memories of a 1989 banner directed at then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson, which read, "Three years of excuses and it's still crap... ta ra Fergie." Despite the initial criticism, Ferguson went on to become the most successful manager in Manchester United's history.
The defeat to Tottenham, which ended in a 4-2 loss, marked United's elimination from the Carabao Cup. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir faced scrutiny for his performance, with critical errors contributing to goals from Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min.
Meanwhile, speculation about Rashford's future continues to grow, with rumored interest from clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and several Saudi Arabian teams. Despite the uncertainty, Rashford remains contracted to Manchester United until 2028, earning £325,000 per week.
