Mathias Pogba, the elder brother of French midfielder Paul Pogba, has been handed a three-year prison sentence by a French court, with two years suspended. 
He will serve the remaining one year under house arrest with electronic monitoring rather than in a traditional prison setting.
The court also imposed a fine of €20,000 on Mathias for his involvement in an extortion attempt targeting Paul Pogba in 2022. This attempt included pressuring the footballer, his family, and business associates to secure €13 million in payments.
The case drew significant public attention, with allegations that Paul Pogba had been threatened at gunpoint and coerced into making an initial payment of €100,000. Mathias Pogba’s legal representatives have expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, describing it as overly severe and suggesting plans to appeal.
