South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has been honored with the Interclub Player of the Year award at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, held in Marrakech, Morocco.
Williams, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, was instrumental in leading his team to a record-extending seventh consecutive South African league title, during which they conceded only 11 goals in 30 matches—a joint league record.
In addition to his club success, Williams captained the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d'Ivoire. His exceptional performances throughout the year earned him nominations in three categories at the CAF Awards: Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Interclub Player of the Year.
The other nominees for the Interclub Player of the Year (Men) included:
- **Ahmed Sayed 'Zizo'** (Egypt / Zamalek): Played a pivotal role in Zamalek's CAF Confederation Cup victory, contributing four goals during the tournament, and also helped secure the 2024 CAF Super Cup against Al Ahly.
- **Hussein El Shahat** (Egypt / Al Ahly): Key figure in Al Ahly's Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League double, known for his goal-scoring ability and playmaking skills.
Williams expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, "It's a proud moment and I am excited and happy to be amongst the elite."
His achievements have been celebrated both domestically and internationally, highlighting his significant contributions to African football over the past year.
