Sporting Clube de Portugal has announced the dismissal of head coach João Pereira, who had assumed the role following Rúben Amorim's departure to Manchester United in November. 
Pereira, a former Sporting player and coach of the club's B team, was appointed to lead the first team on November 11, 2024. His tenure began with a 6–0 victory over Amarante in the Taça de Portugal. However, subsequent matches resulted in a series of defeats, including losses to Arsenal and Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, as well as Santa Clara and Moreirense in domestic competitions.
In light of these results, the club has decided to terminate Pereira's contract. Reports indicate that Rui Borges, currently managing Vitória de Guimarães, is set to succeed Pereira as head coach. Sporting is expected to activate Borges' €4 million release clause to facilitate the move.
An official announcement regarding Borges' appointment is anticipated in the coming hours.
