Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Ghana national football team, recently addressed his former teammates during an emotional Instagram Live session, discussing the enduring criticism he has faced over his missed penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
In that match, held on July 2, 2010, at Soccer City in Johannesburg, Ghana took an early lead with a long-range goal from Sulley Muntari. Uruguay equalized through a free kick by Diego Forlán. The game proceeded to extra time, where a dramatic incident occurred: with the match nearing its conclusion, Uruguay's Luis Suárez deliberately handled the ball on the goal line to prevent a certain goal, resulting in a red card and a penalty for Ghana. Gyan stepped up to take the penalty but struck the crossbar, and the match ultimately went to a penalty shootout, which Uruguay won 4–2.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Gyan expressed his frustration over the lack of support from his teammates during that challenging period. He emphasized the emotional toll the incident took on him and the enduring impact of the criticism he received.
Throughout his international career, Gyan earned 109 caps for Ghana, scoring 51 goals. He is celebrated as the nation's all-time top scorer and has been instrumental in their successes on the international stage.
