Hansi Flick Names Wojciech Szczęsny as Barcelona’s First-Choice Goalkeeper, Leaving Iñaki Peña Sidelined Ahead of Champions League Clash

FC Barcelona's head coach, Hansi Flick, has officially designated Wojciech Szczęsny as the team's primary goalkeeper, superseding Iñaki Peña.
This decision comes in the wake of Marc-André ter Stegen's season-ending knee injury, which led to Szczęsny's recruitment in October 2024. Initially, fitness concerns and Peña's commendable form delayed Szczęsny's debut until January 4, 2025, during a Copa del Rey match against UD Barbastro.

Szczęsny subsequently featured in both fixtures of the Supercopa de España, where, despite a red card in the final, Barcelona secured the title. He also participated in the Champions League encounter against Benfica and the LaLiga match versus Valencia. Addressing the media ahead of the Champions League game against Atalanta, Flick acknowledged the difficulty of this selection, stating, "Choosing Szczęsny? Of course it was a difficult decision because the goalkeeper position is a special position."

Flick emphasized that this choice does not undermine Peña's abilities, noting that both goalkeepers have performed admirably. He also highlighted Szczęsny's recent experience in Italy as beneficial for the upcoming match against Atalanta.
