Mason Greenwood Switches International Allegiance from England to Jamaica

Mason Greenwood, the 23-year-old forward currently playing for Olympique de Marseille, has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Jamaica.

This decision follows the Football Association's (FA) indication that Greenwood would not be considered for future England selections, effectively ending his prospects of adding to his single cap earned in September 2020.

Greenwood's international career faced uncertainty after his suspension from football three years ago, when he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. Although he denied all charges, which were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023, the FA remained concerned about the adverse publicity his inclusion might generate.

Eligible to represent Jamaica through his father, Greenwood has completed the necessary paperwork to formalize his switch under FIFA regulations. According to these rules, players who have featured in no more than three competitive matches before turning 21 are permitted to change national teams. Greenwood's sole appearance for England at 18 years old falls within this criterion.

Steve McClaren, former Manchester United assistant and current head coach of Jamaica's national team, has confirmed Greenwood's commitment to the Reggae Boyz. McClaren anticipates Greenwood's participation in upcoming World Cup qualifiers, stating, "He wants to join the Reggae Boyz... I've no reason to doubt that, and the process goes on." However, Marseille is reportedly unwilling to release Greenwood for the national team's friendly matches in March, as they are not part of the official FIFA calendar. He is expected to be named in McClaren's squad for the first time in June, when Jamaica has two World Cup qualifiers.

Since joining Marseille in July 2024, Greenwood has made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals, 12 of which have come in Ligue 1.
