Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the signing of U.S. Women's National Team defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave, setting a new world record transfer fee in women's football. The deal, valued at approximately £900,000 ($1.1 million), makes Girma the first female player to command a million-dollar transfer fee.
Girma, 24, was unveiled at Stamford Bridge prior to Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Arsenal. She has signed a long-term contract with the club, bolstering their defensive lineup following the injury of centre-back Kadeisha Buchanan.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor expressed her enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "Naomi is a player we've admired for a long time. Her defensive capabilities and leadership qualities will be invaluable as we continue to compete at the highest levels."
Girma's impressive career includes being the first overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft by San Diego Wave, where she earned accolades such as NWSL Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Internationally, she has been capped 44 times for the U.S. and played a pivotal role in securing the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Reflecting on her move, Girma said, "Joining Chelsea is a dream come true. The club's culture and winning mentality align perfectly with my ambitions. I'm excited to contribute and grow here."
