Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has acknowledged that head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made an error in publicly criticizing Ademola Lookman, emphasizing that the remarks were regrettable and not in line with the club's philosophy.
Speaking on the issue, Pagliuca described Gasperini’s reaction as emotional and unfortunate, stating, “His comments were a mistake and not something we are proud of. However, I must stress that Gasperini remains an excellent coach.” He reiterated that Atalanta operates on a principle of collective accountability, where setbacks are managed internally rather than through individual blame.
Despite the controversy, Pagliuca pointed to Atalanta's emphatic 5-0 victory against Empoli as a sign of the team’s resilience. He highlighted the importance of unity and credited Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere for their contributions to the squad’s success.
Looking ahead, discussions surrounding Gasperini’s future continue, especially following his declaration that he would not extend his contract beyond 2026. Pagliuca assured that the club’s management, led by CEO Luca Percassi, would handle any necessary decisions while working in alignment with Gasperini’s long-term vision.
Atalanta now aims to move forward from the situation, maintaining their focus on their objectives in Serie A.
