Atlético Madrid Held to 1-1 Draw Against Celta Vigo Despite Playing with 10 Men and Early Red Card

Atlético Madrid's pursuit of La Liga leadership was thwarted on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Celta Vigo, despite playing with ten men for the majority of the match.

The match commenced with a setback for Atlético when midfielder Pablo Barrios received a straight red card in the fourth minute for a dangerous tackle on Pablo Durán. This early dismissal forced Atlético to adjust their strategy, opting to cede possession to Celta Vigo and focus on defensive solidity.

Celta Vigo capitalized on their numerical advantage in the 68th minute when Robin Le Normand fouled Borja Iglesias inside the penalty area, leading to a penalty awarded to the visitors. Veteran striker Iago Aspas stepped up to convert the spot-kick, giving Celta Vigo a 1-0 lead.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Atlético Madrid mounted a resilient response. Substitute Alexander Sørloth proved to be the difference-maker, scoring the equalizer in the 81st minute. The goal came from a well-executed counter-attack, with José María Giménez providing the assist.

The draw leaves Atlético Madrid in second place in La Liga, one point behind leaders Real Madrid, who were also held to a 1-1 draw earlier in the day against Osasuna. Barcelona, with a game in hand, are third on 48 points and are set to play Rayo Vallecano next.
