Since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in August 2022 for £20 million, Chukwuemeka has made 23 appearances for the Blues, scoring once. However, his playing time has been limited this season, with only five appearances across all competitions, primarily in the UEFA Conference League.
The loan to Borussia Dortmund presents Chukwuemeka with an opportunity to gain more regular first-team experience in the Bundesliga. Dortmund, currently positioned 11th in the league, have been active in the transfer market, aiming to strengthen their squad. The club recently appointed Niko Kovač as head coach, following the departure of Nuri Şahin.
Chukwuemeka expressed enthusiasm about the move, stating his excitement to join Dortmund and play at Signal Iduna Park. He is expected to undergo a medical examination in Dortmund on Monday, February 3, 2025, the final day of the transfer window.
This transfer aligns with Chelsea's strategy to loan out several players to gain valuable playing time and experience. Notably, Chelsea has also loaned out Renato Veiga to Juventus and Caleb Wiley to Watford during the winter transfer window.
