Club Brugge Stun Atalanta with Last-Minute Penalty in Champions League Thriller

Club Brugge claimed a 2-1 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout phase playoff on February 12, 2025. The match, held at Brugge's home ground, was decided by a controversial stoppage-time penalty.

Club Brugge took the lead in the 15th minute when Ferran Jutglà capitalized on a defensive error, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Rui Patrício. Atalanta responded just before halftime, with Mario Pašalić heading in a cross from Davide Zappacosta to level the score.

The game seemed destined to end in a draw until stoppage time, when a contentious penalty was awarded to Club Brugge. Atalanta defender Isak Hien was adjudged to have fouled Gustaf Nilsson, though replays suggested minimal contact. Nilsson converted from the spot, securing the win for the Belgian side.

Atalanta's coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, expressed frustration with the decision, stating that football is moving in a direction he no longer recognizes. Midfielder Marten de Roon also voiced his disappointment but emphasized the need to focus on the upcoming second leg.

The teams will meet again in the return fixture, where Atalanta will aim to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
