Pep Guardiola has hailed Nico González as a “mini-Rodri” following Manchester City's dominant 4-0 win over Newcastle United on February 15, 2025. The City manager commended the young midfielder’s presence on the pitch, highlighting his ability in duels and his potential to grow within the team.
“The presence from Nico helps us a lot in 50/50s,” Guardiola said. “Manchester City made an incredible investment for the future.”
González, who joined City from Porto for £50 million during the mid-season transfer window, made a strong impression in his Premier League debut. While Guardiola acknowledged his talent, he also pointed out that the Spaniard still has areas to develop before reaching Rodri’s level.
“It’s a big compliment, but in duels, he is,” Guardiola added. “He’s far away in other things because Rodri is the best.”
The match also saw Omar Marmoush deliver an outstanding performance, scoring a first-half hat-trick. The Egyptian forward, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for £59 million, demonstrated his attacking prowess and helped City secure a crucial victory.
With this win, Manchester City moves up to fourth place in the Premier League standings as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.
