Diego Simeone Questions VAR Decision After Atletico Madrid's UCL Exit

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed his frustration with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision that disallowed Julian Alvarez's penalty during their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Real Madrid.
The match, held at the Metropolitano Stadium, ended 1-0 in favor of Atletico Madrid during regular time, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2. However, Real Madrid triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

The controversy arose during the shootout when Alvarez's penalty was ruled out after VAR determined he had made a double contact with the ball. Alvarez slipped while taking the spot-kick, causing the ball to touch both his left and right feet before finding the back of the net. The referee, after consulting VAR, disallowed the goal, citing the rule that a penalty must be taken with a single touch.

In his post-match press conference, Simeone voiced his disbelief at the decision. "To anyone here: raise your hand if you saw that Julián touched the ball twice in the penalty. Come on! And? Ready? Nobody raises theirs. Another question," he remarked. He added, "I’ve never seen VAR call to review a penalty in a shootout."

Despite the defeat, Simeone praised his players for their effort and resilience throughout the match. Real Madrid's victory continues their dominance over Atletico in Champions League encounters, as they advance to face Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
