Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti shared a lighthearted moment during his post-match press conference, revealing the thought process behind selecting Antonio Rüdiger as the final penalty taker in their dramatic UEFA Champions League Round of 16 victory over Atletico Madrid.
The match, held at the Metropolitano Stadium, ended 1-0 in favor of Atletico Madrid during regular time, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2. The game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Real Madrid emerged victorious with a 4-2 win.
Ancelotti admitted there was initial uncertainty about whether the decisive spot-kick should be taken by Rüdiger or young Brazilian forward Endrick. "We wanted Endrick to take the final penalty," Ancelotti explained. "But then I saw his face, and I decided Rüdiger was the better option," he added with a laugh.
Rüdiger's composed finish sealed Real Madrid's progression to the quarterfinals, adding another chapter to their storied rivalry with Atletico Madrid.
