Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has taken decisive action following a disappointing performance in a training match, canceling the senior squad's scheduled day off after a 3-0 defeat to the club's U21 team.
The unexpected loss occurred during the international break, with the U21s, including some U16 players, outperforming the first team. Donnell McNeilly, 19, played a key role by scoring twice, while Chizzy Ezenwata added another to secure a dominant victory over Maresca’s side.
Maresca’s response highlights his high expectations and commitment to discipline within the squad as Chelsea remains in contention for a top-five Premier League finish and continues its campaigns in both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. This firm approach is consistent with his earlier decision to drop Noni Madueke for failing to meet training standards.
However, there was positive news on the injury front, as both Cole Palmer and Madueke returned to training. Palmer, who missed the Arsenal match and withdrew from England duty due to a muscle issue, has been cleared to resume playing. Meanwhile, Madueke, out since February with a hamstring injury, also took part in training, with reports suggesting that Friday’s session was more in line with Maresca’s expectations.
Chelsea faces crucial upcoming fixtures, including a London derby against Tottenham on Thursday, followed by a match against Brentford three days later. The team is also preparing for a Europa Conference League quarter-final clash against Legia Warszawa as they continue their pursuit of silverware.
Despite recent setbacks, Chelsea remains in fourth place in the Premier League, aiming for Champions League qualification. Maresca’s actions underline his determination to uphold high standards as the team approaches a defining stage of the season.
