Inter Milan Extend Serie A Lead with Commanding Victory over Atalanta

Inter Milan solidified their position atop Serie A with a decisive 2-0 victory over Atalanta on March 16, 2025. This win extended their lead to three points over Napoli, who were held to a goalless draw by Venezia earlier that day. 

The match commenced with Inter asserting early dominance, as forward Marcus Thuram struck the post in the opening minutes. Atalanta responded with vigor, with midfielder Mario Pasalic's header compelling a crucial save from Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. 

The breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute when Carlos Augusto headed home a precise corner from Hakan Çalhanoğlu, leaving Atalanta's goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi stationary. 

Tensions escalated in the 81st minute as Atalanta's midfielder Éderson received two rapid yellow cards—first for dissent and then for sarcastically applauding the referee's decision—resulting in his dismissal. Inter capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Lautaro Martínez doubling the lead in the 87th minute, skillfully finishing from a Nicolò Barella assist. 

Despite a late red card for Inter's Alessandro Bastoni in stoppage time, the team maintained their composure to secure the victory. This result not only halted Atalanta's seven-game unbeaten streak but also reinforced Inter's aspirations for the Scudetto.
