Jean-Philippe Mateta Hospitalized After "Kung Fu" Kick By Millwall Goalkeeper

Jean-Philippe Mateta was rushed to the hospital after suffering a shocking head injury during Crystal Palace’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Millwall at Selhurst Park. The forward was on the receiving end of a dangerous high boot from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who was subsequently sent off for the reckless challenge.

The incident occurred just eight minutes into the match when Roberts attempted to clear a long ball outside his penalty area but instead struck Mateta in the head. Medical staff quickly attended to the Crystal Palace striker, who was given oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off wearing a neck brace.
Referee Michael Oliver initially took no action but, after a VAR review, issued a straight red card to Roberts for the dangerous challenge. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish strongly condemned the tackle, calling it “the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I've ever seen.”

Mateta, who has been in fine form with 12 Premier League goals this season, was replaced under concussion substitution protocols. Despite the early setback, Crystal Palace secured a 3-1 victory over Millwall, advancing to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

As of now, there has been no official update on Mateta’s condition following his hospitalization. The incident has reignited discussions on player safety and the need for stricter enforcement of dangerous play in football.
