Liam Roberts' Ban Extended to Six Matches Following Horror Challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta

Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts has received an extended six-match suspension following a serious foul on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during their FA Cup fifth-round match. The incident occurred in the sixth minute when Roberts' high boot caught Mateta in the head, resulting in a severe ear injury that required 25 stitches. Initially, Roberts was issued a three-match ban for serious foul play.

However, the Football Association (FA) appealed for a longer suspension, deeming the original penalty insufficient. An independent regulatory commission upheld the appeal, leading to the six-match ban.

Roberts expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating he was "devastated" by the incident and emphasized that he never intended to harm a fellow professional. He also addressed the abusive messages and threats directed at him and his family following the challenge.

Millwall expressed disappointment with the extended ban but respect for the FA's decision. The club also condemned the online abuse directed at Roberts, calling for improved conduct within the football community.

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is recovering well from the injury and is expected to return to action in time for the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham later this month.
