Peter Obi Mourns Doyin Okupe, Hails His Contribution to Nigerian Politics

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a prominent political figure and his former campaign Director-General. Dr. Okupe, aged 72, passed away on Friday morning in Lagos.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi conveyed his grief: "With great sadness this morning, I received the shocking news of the death of my dear elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe. On behalf of the family and the Obidient family, I sincerely mourn his passing." 

Obi lauded Dr. Okupe's active involvement in Nigeria's political sphere and his aspiration for a better nation, stating that his death is a significant loss to both his family and the country. He urged supporters and the public to pray for the repose of Okupe's soul and to support his family during this challenging period. 

Dr. Okupe's political career spanned several decades, during which he served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. He also co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos and was the publisher of 'Life Mirror,' a health-focused newspaper. 

His passing has elicited tributes from various political figures, reflecting his substantial influence in Nigerian politics. President Bola Tinubu described Okupe as a bold and articulate advocate for national development, expressing deep sorrow over his death. Similarly, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun referred to Okupe's death as a personal loss, acknowledging his unwavering service to Nigeria and his commitment to progressive politics.
