Despite serving a 30-year prison sentence, R. Kelly recently showcased his vocal abilities during a rare podcast interview. The disgraced singer appeared on the Inmate Tea with A&P podcast, where he performed snippets of his 1998 song When a Woman's Fed Up and his 2003 hit Step in the Name of Love.
During the interview, Kelly described singing as “a beautiful disease that’s uncurable,” emphasizing his deep connection to music. He also claimed to have written 25 albums while incarcerated. Currently held in a federal prison in North Carolina, Kelly spoke about his desire to “work on getting out” and explained that he is relying on “patience as a tactic” to navigate his legal battles.
In addition to his 30-year sentence for federal racketeering and sex trafficking convictions, Kelly received a 20-year sentence in Chicago for federal sex crimes. However, a judge ruled that only one of those years would be served consecutively, while the remaining 19 years would run concurrently with his existing sentence. In February, a federal appeals court upheld his racketeering convictions and confirmed that he would remain behind bars for the foreseeable future.
Despite his legal struggles, Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, remains optimistic, stating that he "is not a broken man and no one should count him out." She emphasized that his legal team continues to pursue appeals and will "fight for justice and his freedom."
