Jack Grealish Allegedly Assaulted by Manchester United Fan Following Goalless Manchester Derby
Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish was allegedly assaulted by a Manchester United supporter following the recent Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The incident reportedly occurred near the tunnel after the match when Grealish, who had come on as a substitute in the 74th minute, was lured by a spectator and subsequently slapped. Fortunately, the England international did not sustain serious injuries.
The derby match ended in a 0-0 draw, with neither side able to convert their chances. Manchester United’s best opportunity came through Joshua Zirkzee late in the game, but his shot was denied by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson. The result saw City drop points in the title race, while United turned their attention to an upcoming Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon.
Following the incident, a 20-year-old man identified as Alfie Holt from Droylsden was arrested and charged with assault. He is expected to appear before Manchester Magistrates' Court in July. Both clubs have declined to comment further due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about player safety, particularly as it comes years after Grealish was attacked by a pitch invader during a Championship game against Birmingham City in 2019. That offender was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison and handed a 10-year ban from football stadiums.
In addition to the alleged assault, the derby was marred by offensive chants directed at Manchester City’s Phil Foden and his mother by sections of the home crowd. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola condemned the chants, describing them as classless and lacking in integrity.
