The proposal, backed by FIFA Council member Ignacio Alonso, aims to mark the World Cup's centenary by increasing the number of participating teams from 48 to 64. However, this would also increase the number of matches from 104 to 128, causing logistical challenges and raising environmental concerns due to increased travel for both teams and fans.
Ceferin further emphasized that UEFA was not consulted before the proposal was made and reiterated the organization’s opposition to the plan. He warned that a European boycott of the event could occur if the expansion goes ahead, stressing that UEFA and its member nations are united in their stance against the idea.
The 2030 World Cup is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with additional matches scheduled to take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. This already complicated setup would become even more challenging if the proposed expansion were implemented.
