Aaron Wan-Bissaka Called Up by DR Congo for First Senior International Duty

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the 27-year-old Manchester United right-back, is set to embark on a new international journey after receiving his first-ever senior call-up from the Democratic Republic of Congo—his country of descent. This marks a potential turning point in his international career after years of speculation.

Born in Croydon to Congolese parents, Wan-Bissaka represented DR Congo at under-20 level back in 2015 before switching allegiance to England, where he featured at both U20 and U21 levels. However, despite his consistent performances in the Premier League, he never broke into the senior England squad—leaving the door wide open for a switch.
Now, DR Congo have officially come calling, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fast approaching in January 2024, the Leopards are strengthening their squad—and Wan-Bissaka could be a key piece of that puzzle. If he accepts, it would mark his senior debut for DR Congo and a return to his roots on the international stage.

Coach Sébastien Desabre recently stated that the national team is “open to all players of Congolese heritage—provided their commitment comes from the heart.” Wan-Bissaka’s decision to switch could not only boost DR Congo’s AFCON hopes but also see him miss several Manchester United fixtures during the tournament.
