Ancelotti explained that Neymar's omission is due to his recent return from injury. The coach stated, "I spoke with Neymar, and we mutually agreed that it's best for him to continue his recovery to ensure he's in optimal condition for the World Cup." Neymar has been sidelined since October 2023 after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee during a match against Uruguay. Although he made a return to his boyhood club Santos in January 2025, a subsequent thigh injury in March further delayed his full recovery.
In addition to Neymar, several other key players are absent from the squad due to injuries. Rodrygo Goes, the Real Madrid forward, aggravated a thigh injury during a match against Osasuna in November 2024, leading to his substitution after just 20 minutes of play. Éder Militão, the central defender, suffered a torn ACL and meniscus damage in his right knee during the same match against Osasuna, ruling him out for the remainder of the season. Éderson, the Manchester City goalkeeper, has been dealing with a thigh injury, which has prevented his participation in recent fixtures.
Ancelotti emphasized his confidence in Neymar's future contributions, stating, "I trust Neymar and count on him. We want him to be at his best for the World Cup."
Brazil is set to face Ecuador on June 5 in Guayaquil, followed by a match against Paraguay. The team currently sits fourth in the CONMEBOL standings, aiming to secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
