Ex-Arsenal forward Carlos Vela has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a distinguished 19-year career.
Vela, who joined Arsenal in 2005 after starring for Mexico at the FIFA U-17 World Championship, made his senior debut for the Gunners in 2008 and is fondly remembered for a stunning hat-trick against Sheffield United in the League Cup. Although he struggled to secure a regular first-team spot in North London, loan spells across Spain eventually led to a permanent move to Real Sociedad.
At Sociedad, the Mexican international flourished, scoring 73 goals in 250 appearances and playing a key role in the team’s return to European competition. His performances earned him recognition as one of the top forwards in La Liga during his time in Spain.
In 2018, Vela became the first-ever signing for Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC (LAFC). He quickly became the face of the franchise, setting the MLS single-season goal record with 34 goals in 2019 and winning the MVP award. He helped lead LAFC to their first-ever MLS Cup title in 2022 and departs as the club’s all-time leader in goals (78), assists (59), and appearances (152).
Internationally, Vela earned 72 caps for Mexico, scoring 19 goals. He featured in both the 2010 and 2018 FIFA World Cups and helped El Tri win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009 and 2015.
Announcing his decision on Instagram, Vela thanked his family, teammates, and fans, stating, “Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club is a highlight of my career.”
Following his retirement, Vela will remain connected to LAFC as their first-ever Black & Gold Ambassador. The club will host “Noche de Carlos Vela” on September 21, 2025, at BMO Stadium in honour of his contributions.
